Victorian Crown Molding

Crown molding from the Victorian era emphasized ornate architectural details made possible by advancements in mill technology. Victorian crown molding was still made of separate parts, but the combined profiles created elaborate designs that could feature careful scrollwork.

Victorian Door Casing

Door and window casing found in Victorian era homes was often ornate and decorative. Doors were particularly ornate and typically featured transoms, sidelights, and pediments to create a grand look absent from neo-classical homes.

Victorian Plinth Block

Plinth blocks were common in Victorian homes. They sat at the base of door or window casing, adding depth to the outline of an opening.

Baseboard was often accompanied by wainscoting in Victorian homes. Wall panelling in particular featured a variety of colors and finishes in many Victorian era homes. In homes inspired by Gothic or Romantic influences, wainscoting was often painted or stained in a tone that complimented patterned wallpapers which became more common during this period.

Victorian Architecture & Molding Characteristics

In North America, what most historians and architects refer to as the "Victorian Era," lasted from 1860 to 1900; however, Victorian influences can be seen in Architecture for decades into the 1900s.

Victorian architecture was eclectic, encompassing a number of revival styles, including Gothic, Romanesque, and Queen Anne styles. A common characteristic among all Victorian moldings and trim was elaborate ornamentation. Victorian era moldings were often constructed from wood and could be painted or stained - sometimes in bright colors. This is especially true of exterior trimwork.
