EAST FAIRMOUNT PARK, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA
Built in 1753 by Joshua Fisher, the great-grandfather of American industrialist Joseph Wharton, remained in the Fisher family for more than a hundred years when the Fairmount Park Commission purchased it in 1868. The Cliffs burned on February 2, 1986, due to vandalism and arson and firefighters were unable to extinguish it due to their heavy trucks sinking in the clay surrounding the house. The stone shell of the house is the only thing that remains today and can be seen from the Schuylkill Expressway.
